Compression Router Bit for woodworking:
Compressing cutters do exactly what they say - they push chips from the bottom of the cutter up (for about the first 1/4 typically) and then everything above that gets pushed down. If you're sidemilling, this is great - you don't get tear-out in top or bottom because chips are pushed into the center of the workpiece. If you're plunging with it, once you get to the part of the cutter that pushes chips down you're pushing them into back into the hole with no exit. They compact, the bottom pushes more chips into that compression zone, more pressure and more heat and more friction and congratulations, you've started a fire. Compression cutters will do this Every. Single. Time. Do not use them for drilling - use a drill, that's what they're there for. Or possibly an up cutting end mill (NOT DOWN) if you really need a squareish bottomed hole
